The essential units that keep the 25th Infantry Division fighting
25th Combat Aviation Brigade
The Combat Aviation Brigade provides rotary-wing aviation support for the Division, including attack helicopters, assault helicopters, cargo helicopters, and medevac capabilities. Based at Wheeler Army Airfield adjacent to Schofield Barracks, the aviation brigade has been a critical component of the Division since the Vietnam War, when helicopter operations became central to the Army's way of fighting. The 25th Aviation Battalion provided helicopter support throughout the Division's Vietnam operations, flying assault missions, resupply, medevac, and reconnaissance across III Corps.
Corps of Engineers
Engineer units have supported the 25th Infantry Division in every conflict, building roads, bridges, fortifications, and base camps while also conducting combat engineer operations including mine clearance, demolitions, and obstacle construction. During Vietnam, the 65th Engineer Battalion was a key enabler for the Division, constructing and maintaining the extensive network of fire support bases, roads, and defensive positions throughout the Division's area of operations. Engineers also played a critical role in tunnel operations at Cu Chi, where the Viet Cong maintained an extensive underground tunnel system beneath the Division's base camp.
Signal Corps
Signal units provide the communications backbone that allows the Division to command and control its forces across the battlefield. From field telephones and radio sets in WWII to the digital command and control systems of today, Signal soldiers have kept the Division connected. During Vietnam, the 125th Signal Battalion provided communications support for the Division, maintaining radio networks, telephone systems, and message centers across the Division's area of operations.
Intelligence
Military intelligence units provide the Division commander with information about the enemy and the battlefield environment. Intelligence soldiers collect, analyze, and disseminate information that drives operational decisions. During Vietnam, the Division's intelligence assets were critical in identifying enemy base areas, tracking Viet Cong movements, and supporting targeting for air and artillery strikes.
Military Police
Military police units provide law enforcement, security, and battlefield circulation control for the Division. MPs secure key installations, conduct route security operations, manage prisoners of war, and enforce military law. During Vietnam, military police provided security for convoys, base camps, and key terrain throughout the Division's area of operations.
Special Troops
Special troops include the headquarters and support elements that enable the Division to function as a fighting organization. This includes the Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, which provides command and control, staff support, and administrative services for the Division commander and staff.
Medical Units
Medical personnel have served with extraordinary distinction in the 25th Infantry Division. The Division's medics, surgeons, and evacuation units have saved countless lives across every conflict. Multiple medical aidmen earned the Medal of Honor while serving with the Division, including Technician 4th Grade Laverne Parrish (WWII), Private First Class Bryant E.
Womack (Korea), and Corporal Thomas W. Bennett (Vietnam), who was a conscientious objector serving as a medic. The 12th Evacuation Hospital provided hospital-level care for the Division during Vietnam.
Chemical Corps
Chemical units provide support for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) defense operations. During Vietnam, chemical units conducted defoliation operations and supported smoke screening missions to protect Division operations.
Transportation
Transportation units provide the logistics and movement capabilities that keep the Division supplied and mobile. From truck convoys to helicopter sling loads, transportation soldiers ensure ammunition, food, fuel, and equipment reach the soldiers who need them.
Finance
Finance units manage the pay and financial operations that support soldiers and their families. Even in combat zones, soldiers need to be paid and financial records maintained. Finance soldiers have deployed with the Division to every conflict zone.
25th Sustainment Brigade
The 25th Sustainment Brigade provides logistics support for the Division, including supply, maintenance, transportation, and field services. Based at Schofield Barracks, the Sustainment Brigade ensures the Division has the beans, bullets, and fuel it needs to fight and win. The brigade's soldiers are the unsung heroes who keep the Division's combat power sustained across extended operations.
